Integrated skills-based Activity—-Weiwei
- Target learner population
Class Grade: Grade 6, Aged from 11-12 years old
Number: 3 boys and 5 girls
Level: on/ above level
Situation: They are all English Language Learners.
William tends to lose focus sometimes
Heterogeneous grouping
Three boys can't be in the same group; they will not share ideas, don't care about group honours, and they would like to mess it up for fun.
Students can use the iPads in the classroom.
- Target language skill
Topic: Who is the Car Thief?
Students will understand the case through reading materials
Students will play police officers and residents, asking or answering questions about the case
Students will organize case clues to form case analysis charts
The students will hold a press conference to report the results of the investigation and restore the truth of the case
Reading Skill: Scanning & Skimming
Grammar Skill: Simple Past tense
Listening Skill: Understand police questions and civilian’s answers for clues
Speaking Skill: Answer questions about the past tense, communicate with police and civilians, and be able to use the past tense to explain cases
Critical thinking: Use clues to sort through information and form case logic to find the car thief
- Sequence of events
1. Lead in
Using animation to let students know that there is a car thief in Animal City, animation can also stimulate students' interests
2. Background
Give students case information (a small reading) and guide students to quickly scan and find relevant clues
Review the main grammatical points of the past tense, did, and the past conjugation of verbs
3. Group up
Using the small program turntable, let students have the number
For example, teachers can specify 1-3 as police leaders, 4-6 as team members, and 7-8 as civilians
(I would trick the students into identifying themselves according to the numbers they drew so that all three boys would not be in the same group.)
4. Intra-group discussion and investigation
Three police chiefs receive iPads
The group leader led the group members to sort out the investigation problems (the teacher walked around to observe and remind them to use the past tense)
Students can conduct investigations according to their identities, ask questions about civilians, and search for relevant information on the Internet, such as words needed for the investigation
Group members discuss and organize information to form a report chart for each group
5. Press conference
Two civilians served as moderators to introduce the background information of the conference
Three team leaders led the police to make investigation reports, find the car thief and explain the reasons for combing the case
(The case process reminds students to use the past tense)
